6 Steps Essential to Maintenance Management

6 Steps Essential to Maintenance Management

Keeping your fleet at peak performance is the goal of everyone involved, especially your maintenance team.

Maintenance can make or break your fleet’s performance. You may feel you’ve got it under control, but there are always additional ways to improve your maintenance program. In a recent IdeaXchange blog, Jane Clark, Vice President of Member Services for NationaLease noted that small steps can make a big difference when it comes to fleet maintenance.

  1. Don’t disregard the DVIR – Don’t just review your Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports: act on them. Your drivers are doing their part to let you know any issues that occur. Now it’s maintenance’s turn to address those issues.
  2. Don’t skip scheduled maintenance – Complacency is a bad thing when it comes to maintenance. Skipping a PMI or scheduled appointment means you could miss a developing problem that, caught in time, will be easier and cheaper to fix.
  3. Track PM compliance – Regardless of how often your trucks return to your location, you should be able to identify which trucks have had the requisite PM service and which still need to be scheduled.
  4. Use VMRS codes – When everyone speaks the same “language,” mistakes are less likely to occur. You need to take the guesswork out of any repairs and maintenance services needed.
  5. Treat each asset as unique when it comes to maintenance – Since trucks vary in age and technology, you tailor inspections and service to each individual asset.
  6. Review maintenance schedules – New assets? Aging assets? As your fleet changes, so might your maintenance schedules.
